The University of Skövde inaugurates a record number of professors
The University of Skövde holds an Academic Ceremony in the autumn every other year. This year the ceremony is held on the 7th of October, and no less than ten new professors are to be inaugurated.
The academic ceremony, which is open to the general public, is held at St Helena church in Skövde. There the new professors will be officially welcomed as new members of the faculty by prominent figures of the University.
The New Professors:
Katarina Ejeskär is a cancer researcher who is studying gene expression in tumor cells. She is being inaugurated as professor in the field of biomedicine.
Anette Ekström’s research aims to improve the profession support surrounding child birth and breast-feeding. She is being inaugurated as professor in the field of nursing.
Lars Hanson is an engineer and conducts research into integrated product development which entails constructions and production of products and production systems. He is being inaugurated as professor in the field of engineering science.
Ali Kazemi’s research focuses on working life and health, where social issues related to working and societal life are included. He is being inaugurated as professor in Social Psychology.
Alexandra Krettek’s research is specifically aimed at the area of global health. She is being inaugurated as professor in the field of public health.
Dennis Larsson has concentrated his research on the area of vitamin D. He is being inaugurated as professor in the field of biomedicine.
Lena Mårtensson’s research is tied to the beginning of life and the area of human reproduction from a life cycle perspective. She is being inaugurated as professor in the field of nursing.
Sakari Suominen is a doctor of medicine and has specialized in nursing with in depth studies pertaining to salutogenesis, a health sociological theory that seeks to establish the causes of health. He is being inaugurated as professor in the field of public health.
Vincenç Torras’ area of research is artificial intelligence (AI), and he conducts research in the area of machine learning and techniques for data base integration. He is being inaugurated as professor in the field informatics.
Homa Tajsharghi carries out research within the etiology and pathobiology of genetic diseases in heart and skeleton muscles. She is being inaugurated as professor in the field biomedicine.
The new professors are being inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Skövde Sigbritt Karlsson. Dean Anne Persson confers doctor’s degrees on Jesper Holgersson and Björn Berg Marklund, both connected to the School of Informatics.
At the academic ceremony the new honorary doctor of informatics, Åsa Roos, will also be conferred upon.
A Ceremonious Tradition
The academic ceremony is a ceremony filled with tradition and it is open to all who are interested in attending. Besides the inaugurations and conferment ceremonies, this occasion offers processions, beautiful clothes, speeches and a great deal of joy. This year’s speeches will be held by Jenny Brusk, Doctor in Computer Science and by the Student Union Chairperson Mathias Lindblad, among others. The Vocal group Cantabona and members from Mariestad, Skara and Skövde, along with pupils and teachers from “Musikgymnasiet” (Music High school) in Skövde, are in charge of the music.
After the official ceremony in church the festivities continue with mingling at the ”Kårhuset” (the Student Union building) in “Boulognerparken” (Boulogner park) and with an inauguration dinner at the University restaurant “Götasalen” for specially invited guests.
The University of Skövde was established in 1977 and as a young higher education institution the University wishes to take care of an academic tradition and time-honored customs while also preserving its own history and identity. This certainly applies to the academic ceremonies and events that have been celebrated in our country since the Middle ages.
