Introduction
We're glad that you've chosen to study with us, and want to inform you of the importance that game development has within our community, as well as the different types of events and opportunities you'll be able to participate in during your stay here.
Programme start
The autumn semester starts on Monday 2nd of September, 2024, and we will begin at 10:15-17:00 in room G316 (house G) with a joint programme start-up event. During this event, all graduate students who are studying any of our three game development programmes will meet each other. This also marks the start of a join workshop that you'll participate in for the rest of the week.
The workshop we will be running at the start of your studies is part of all the programmes' Game Design course. The purpose of this workshop is that everyone should start creating games together, both to get to know each other better, but for all of you to immediately start thinking about game design and game creation – which will be a crucial skill for the rest of your studies. You will be creating board games in small teams, and the workshop will cover basic principles of game design and prototyping. In many ways, it will be a board game Game Jam. You do not need to prepare yourself in any way for the workshop; the important part is that you are prepared to be in Skövde, and at the campus, by September 2.
A unique environment
The University of Skövde has a strong profile within games – both locally and nationally – and for those of you who are arriving from abroad, and from other universities, will start seeing examples of this as soon as you arrive.
Everything we do in research, education, and game industry initiatives, are all done within a unifying organisation: Sweden Game Arena (external link). When you are studying here, you will therefore have access to – and become a part of – a unique environment where you can develop your knowledge and skills in a myriad of ways. Aside from your studies, you will be able to participate in events that are hosted by Sweden Game Arena.
You will meet active game developers in different environments, and we also host the annual Sweden Game Conference, which gives you further opportunities to meet the broader national and international community of game development and game research. In other words: your time here will be very eventful, if you want to take the opportunity.
Welcome!
