      Student Ambassador Xiaoqing Li (Dawn)

Dawn comes from China, is studying Game Development and appreciates the educational philosophy that encourage students to explore their own fields of interest and use the school as a resource.

      Dawn's thoughts about Skövde

Where do you come from originally?
      – China, Shenzhen.

How is it to study in Skövde?
      – The schedule was tight in the first semester but afterward it became more flexible. One can customize their study plans based on one’s needs. So not too stressful, the professors are supportive, and the overall environment is open and free.

Why did you choose to study this program?
      – Good question. Basically I participated in a short-term game development workshop led by three professors from HIS five years ago in Beijing. I was impressed by how they saw games as a unique art form as well as a potential tool for addressing other social problems. It was inspiring. Well of course, they also introduced us to “fika”, and I thought it was one of the best things in the world lol.

What is the biggest advantage of studying at a small school like the University of Skövde?
      – The strong sense of community, since everyone knows everyone, makes it much easier to network and build connections without the usual social anxiety.

What do you want to do for work in five years?
      – I’m thinking about working at the intersection of games and other cultural industries, possibly a position at serious game companies, or working in museums, theaters, or other art sectors with a gamification approach.

What tips would you offer a new student?
      – Set clear goals, stay active and positive, reach out to people, explore new things, and enjoy your life beyond studying; Sweden is a beautiful country.

What is the best thing about the University of Skövde?
      – Its educational philosophy. Instead of imposing knowledge that teachers consider “useful”, students are encouraged to explore their own fields of interest and use the school as a resource. With minimal rules and limitations, it’s like a playground where you can play freely. I feel especially strongly about this, perhaps due to my educational background in a country with a different approach.

What is the best thing about Skövde?
      – Many cultural activities throughout the year. Close to both of the biggest lakes (Vänern and Vättern) in Sweden. Beautiful hiking trails and camping sites within walking distance.

What did you know about Sweden before you moved here?
      – If it’s Sweden specifically, then not much, just the usual – like IKEA, ABBA – and of course, our school. But I’ve always been fascinated about the Viking history though I guess that includes Nordic countries in general.

What was the biggest surprise to you about being a student here?
      – Sweden’s food was not as horrible as I heard lol-

How do you like the student accommodations?
      – My student apartment is not one of those provided by the school, I rent it from Skövdebostäder, slightly more expensive than the former, but with high ceilings, larger space, and a better location (right next to the city center). I love it.

What do you do in your free time?
      – Video games (at home), board games (with friends), hiking, visiting Gothenburg for exhibitions.

What is your favorite course you have taken at the University of Skövde?
      – It’s hard to choose one, but I would say the Project Serious Games so far, in which we could establish close connections with external clients and design a game prototype to solve their problems.

Describe your programme in three words.
      – Interdisciplinary, collaborative, open.
