      Digitalisation and new technologies are fundamentally transforming the manufacturing industry. Despite the fact that diversity enhances innovation and sustainability, women remain underrepresented. By exploring how digital transformation can promote gender equality, this study aims to pave the way for a more inclusive and successful industry.

      How Digital Transformation Shapes Gender Equality in Manufacturing

      The rise of Industry 4.0 technologies—like AI, IoT, machine learning, 3D printing, and robotics—has reshaped manufacturing. As digital transformation progresses, the role of technicians evolves, requiring new ways for humans and technology to collaborate.

      Industry 5.0 builds on this, emphasising human-centred production where people and machines work together for sustainable and efficient systems. A crucial factor for the future of manufacturing is attracting more women to the sector.

      Research shows that diverse teams foster better work environments, drive innovation, and boost productivity. Companies with more female technicians and leaders not only perform better economically but also create more sustainable production systems. Despite this, manufacturing remains male-dominated, with women making up only 20–25% of the workforce globally—especially in leadership roles. The gender pay gap also persists.

      Given that gender equality is central to sustainable development (highlighted in the UN’s Goal 5), it’s essential to explore how digital transformation can either support or hinder progress toward a more inclusive industry. However, research on gender equality in Industry 4.0 and 5.0 is still scarce.

      About the Study

      This research aims to bridge that gap by exploring the relationship between digital transformation and gender equality in manufacturing. The study will:

      1. Analyse existing research on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), gender, and digital transformation to understand their impact on workplace culture.
      2. Investigate gender dynamics in manufacturing through company visits, examining diversity in leadership roles, barriers women face, and opportunities for inclusion.
      3. Develop concrete recommendations for promoting gender equality, providing strategies to increase women's participation in technical and leadership roles.

      By addressing these questions, the study will offer insights into how digital transformation can drive a more diverse, inclusive, and innovative manufacturing industry.
