Newly graduated Ludwig saves lives at the ER

      Published 19 July 2023

As a newly graduated nurse from the University of Skövde, Ludwig von Knorring packed up and moved to the south of Sweden, where he now works at the emergency room at Helsingborg's hospital. His goal is to work in an ambulance helicopter sometime in the future. “But before that, I want to try emergency medical care on land, or why not at sea on an ambulance boat?,” says Ludwig.

Ludwig von Knorring studied the Nursing Programme at the University of Skövde between 2020 and 2023. During his studies, he also worked in healthcare and got involved in student union life, joining SköSjuk - the nursing students' section within the Student Union in Skövde. He was also a student ambassador for the Nursing Programme, a role where he got to answer questions from curious, future nursing students. He, quite simply, enjoyed himself at the University.

“The best thing about the education was the incredible development I experienced. From not knowing much more than the most basic about the human body to knowing a lot about various diseases and how they are treated. The pride grows enormously with each completed course!”

According to Ludwig, the most important knowledge he brings with him from his studies is the importance of seeing each patient as a unique individual.

“Generalizing does not work in healthcare, and the University of Skövde has really put a lot of effort into getting us students to think about that and apply it in practice. It permeates the entire education, from the introduction on the first day to the last day of the programme.

      Meets acutely ill patients

Since the beginning of June, Ludwig has been working as a registered nurse in the emergency department at Helsingborg's hospital. There he meets acutely ill patients when they seek care.

“It can be anything from patients with ongoing heart attacks to broken fingers. At the emergency room, we also receive most ambulances that, for example, come in with patients who have had a cardiac arrest or have been involved in a serious traffic accident.”

Emergency healthcare has always had a special place in Ludwig's heart and helping people at the most critical stage is something he is passionate about. Therefore, he specifically looked for a job in the emergency field where he also intends to stay for a while to gather as much broad knowledge as possible.

“Then I hope to have the opportunity to be continually trained where I work, hopefully in the care of trauma patients, among other things. When I feel ready, specialist training in ambulance healthcare is the next step.”

When we last heard from each other, your dream job was to work as a nurse in an ambulance helicopter. Has it changed?

“The helicopter is still my goal at some point in the future. But before that, I want to try the emergency medical care down on the ground, or why not at sea on an ambulance boat?”

What advice do you have for someone who is thinking of studying at the University of Skövde?

“If you want a more personal study time you should choose the University of Skövde. You won't just be a student in the crowd. It is close to teachers, other students, student life and internships. Student influence is also positively affected!”

“The boundaries between the programmes at the University are vague. I hung out with both economists and game development students during my studies and it was easy to reach the teachers for help or support. It feels like the University and all the students are one big family. On campus there are restaurants where you can study together and a stone's throw from campus is the Student Union Building Boulogner, which has both sittings and open evenings with different themes. Of course you should choose the University of Skövde.”
