      Composition of dissertations

Here you will find instructions on how to compose a dissertation. Dissertation examples can be found in the University library.

      A uniform look for dissertations

Since 2013, the University of Skövde has implemented a uniform look for all Licentiate and Doctoral dissertations. The dissertations are to be written in correct English, on a level that is appropriate for the target audience.

      Front cover

The following information should always appear on the front cover:

      • University of Skövde logotype
      • Licentiate Dissertation or Doctoral Dissertation
      • Title – no more than two lines. The title should describe the contents clearly to facilitate database searches
      • Subtitle, if applicable
      • First name and surname of the author
      • The subject field to which the dissertation relates, e.g. Informatics
      • Illustrations or photographs symbolizing the contents are a welcome addition, see an example of a dissertation (pdf)

      Back cover and spine

The name of the author, the title of the dissertation and the year of publication should appear on the spine. For the back cover, we recommend a brief description of the author along with a popularized summary of the contents.

      Insert

Below you can download templates and instructions for composing the insert.

      First title page

The first page after the front cover inside, page 3, is the first title page. It should contain:

      • Title of the dissertation
      • Subtitle, if applicable

      Exemple of First title page

      Second title page

The second title page is page 5 on the following spread. It should contain:

      • Title of the dissertation
      • Subtitle, if applicable
      • First name and surname of the author
      • The subject field to which the dissertation relates, e.g. Informatics
      • University of Skövde logotype

Example of a Second title page (pdf)

      Imprint page

On the imprint page, the reverse of the second title page (= page 6), the following information should be included:

      • Name of the author
      • Year of publication
      • Title
      • Place and year of printing
      • Name of the printer
      • ISBN number (as supplied by the University library)
      • Report series title and number (as supplied by the University library)

      Example of Imprint page

      Abstract pages, English

Pages 7–8 should contain a concise abstract of up to 360 words in English, providing a brief and comprehensible overview of the essential contents of the dissertation.

      Abstract pages, Swedish

Pages 9–10 should contain a concise abstract (sammanfattning) of up to 360 words in Swedish, providing a likewise brief and comprehensible overview of the essential contents of the dissertation.

      Acknowledgements

On pages 11–12, you can briefly express your gratitude towards everyone who has assisted your research efforts.

      Publications

On pages 13–14, you should list your previously published works in order of relevance.

      Contents

Page 15 should consist of a table of contents, designed to provide a very clear overview of the dissertation and its disposition.

      New chapters

Each new chapter should always begin with a coloured right page. Here you can download a PDF file with design specifications and a list of allowed colours (pdf).

      Images

When including images in your dissertation, keep the following in mind:

      • Image resolution should be no less than 300 dpi.
      • Black and white images should be set to Grayscale, not RGB.
      • Web optimized low resolution images with a reduced colour gamut should be avoided.

      Distribution

The dissertation should be produced according to the instructions and templates provided above, to be submitted as a PDF file.
